Advance Directives

The spoken and/or written instructions about future medical care and treatment


No breathing

Cheyne-Stokes Respiration

A pattern of breathing with gradual increase in depth and sometimes in rate, followed by a decrease resulting in apnea


A bluish, grayish, or dark purple discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes due to reduced amount of oxygen in the blood

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR)

An order signed by the doctor, which means that no heroic measures are to be taken should the respirations cease


Support services provided to a resident with a terminal illness that is anticipated to have six months or less to live


The blue and blotchy appearance of the skin, especially on the hands and feet, which is caused by slow blood circulation

Palliative Care

Care that provides comfort rather than cure

Terminal Illness

A condition that will cause death
